What Should I Have in My Medicine Cupboard

A well-stocked medicine cabinet helps you manage common illnesses and minor injuries at home.

Always follow dosage instructions and check with a pharmacist or Clinician if you have existing conditions or take other medication.

Essential Over-the-Counter Medications

  • Pain Relief & Fever
    Paracetamol and ibuprofen
Do NOT give aspirin to children under 16
  • Antihistamines
For hay fever, hives, insect bites and stings
  • Indigestion Treatment
  • Anti-Diarrhoea Medication. Including oral rehydration sachets
  • Burns. Burns gel or dressings for minor burns
  • Cough & Cold Remedies
    Decongestants, cough syrup, throat lozenges
  • Antiseptic Cream/Ointment
  • Hydrocortisone Cream
    For inflammation, itching, and rashes
  • Sunscreen
    Minimum SPF15 (SPF30 recommended)
  • Constipation. Mild laxatives e.g. Lactulose for adults only unless advised

Basic First-Aid Supplies

You can buy a kit or make your own:

  • Thermometer
  • Plasters & sterile dressings
  • Bandages
  • Tweezers
  • Eye wash solution
  • Medical tape
  • Saline Solution or Alcohol-free cleansing wipes for cleaning wounds

Important Considerations

Storage

Keep medicines in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children.

Expiry Dates

Check regularly and replace expired items.

Avoid double dosing

(e.g. paracetamol and cold remedies)

Always read the instructions.

Special groups, e.g. pregnant ladies, children and the elderly should be more aware of taking medications.

Allergies.

Do not use any medication if you are allergic to any ingredient. If you feel unwell after taking any

medication call 999.

Professional Advice

Ask a pharmacist for help with minor illnesses.

For serious or ongoing symptoms, contact your GP or call NHS 111. Call 999 for emergencies e.g. breathing difficulties, chest pain, severe allergic reactions.

Stay prepared. Stay safe.
